The Chemicals of Concern Policy Summit

This invitation-only event will bring together stakeholders across the entire material and packaging ecosystem, including government officials, NGOs, scientists, alternatives-to-plastics producers, and upstream, midstream, and downstream industry participants, to collaborate on Guidelines for Chemicals of Concern for Plastic Alternatives and Non-Plastic Substitutes ahead of Global Plastic Pollution Treaty INC 5.2 negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland on August 5 -14th.

Day One, April 22, is a technical day targeted for packaging value chain representatives, NGOs, and scientists. Day Two, April 23, is an open session that will also include U.S. policymakers, regulatory agencies, and the media.

The summit will produce an output to inform U.S. policymakers and regulatory agencies, Global Treaty negotiators, and international chemical conventions, including the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions.

The mission of this program is to identify health-driven & business viable approaches to chemical regulation for alternatives and non-plastics substitutes.

Program & Output

The Chemicals of Concern Policy Summit will include a day dedicated to global policy and another dedicated to US policy.

  • April 22: Technical day targeted for packaging value chain representatives, NGOs, and scientists.
  • April 23: Open Session also including U.S. policymakers, regulatory agencies, and media.

Presentations and panels will be recorded. Small group break-out sessions on Day 1 will be held under Chatham House Rule.

The event will:

  • Educate about the impact of chemical pollution on human health and best practices in chemical management
  • Kick off the development of the Guidelines for Chemicals of Concern for plastic alternatives and non-plastic substitutes.
  • Foster alignment to prevent regrettable substitutions and ensure new materials do not introduce similar hazards.

Following the Summit,  stakeholder groups from the entire packaging ecosystem will submit their inputs to the Guidelines on Chemicals of Concern, with priority access to the summit attendees and APLN members.

The scope will include:

  • Recommendation of inclusion / exclusion of Chemicals of Concern Provisions & Alternatives to Plastics & Non Plastics Substitutes in the Treaty on Plastic Pollution
  • Recommendation for US Policy on Chemicals of Concern & Alternatives to Plastics & Non Plastics Substitutes Strategy
  • Recommendations on implementation of existing conventions including Basel, Stockholm & Rotterdam Conventions

Event Logistics

This is an in-person event. Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodations, except for eligible scientists or notified experts who may receive travel and lodging scholarships.​

Venue and Transport: Atlantic Packaging Solution Center is located at 12201 Steele Creek Rd, Charlotte, NC 28273.

Participants are responsible for arranging transportation to and from events. Rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft are reliable in the area. Parking will be limited.

Welcome Reception April 21: We are pleased to invite registered participants to an optional Welcome Reception at Lenny Boy Brewing Company located at 3000 S. Tryon St., ​Charlotte, NC 28217 between 7:30 - 10:00 pm.

Event Meals April 22 & 23: Coffee & light pastries will be provided to participants for breakfast. Participants will receive lunch and mid-day refreshments. Dinner is not provided on April 22nd or 23rd.
